The hardy little neon tetra fish, which is the crown jewel of every aquarium, was brought from South America. Neon tetras are shoaling fish, which means they need to be kept with at least six other neon tetras. Because they are peaceful, they can also be kept with other types of fish. They should live for about 5 years, which is a good amount of time.

It is usually calm, which makes it a good fit for the well-researched community aquarium.

It might do best with characids, betta fish, gasteropelecids, lebiasinids, smaller callichthyid or loricariid catfishes, and small-to-medium cichlids that don't eat other fish.

Try to buy a group of at least 8-10 fish of both sexes, and add other schooling fish for security. This will give you a more natural-looking show.

Keep neon tetras in groups of at least six of their own kind, as they are shoaling fish that need to be with others of their kind. Neon tetras do well in a tank with other fish as long as they are not too big or mean. Small, calm fish like betta fish, rasboras, small tetras, dwarf gouramis, corys, and other small catfish make good companions. Avoid getting bigger tetras because they will eat neon tetras as soon as they get the chance. As a general rule, if the fish's mouth is big enough to swallow the neon, it will happen sooner or later.
